If you had asked me last night what I thought of running, I would have spat. Then I would have shaken my fist in the air, and then just for good measure, I would have spat a second time. And if I had gotten spittle on you I wouldn't have apologized, because, after all, you were the one to bring up the topic.
However, my wife has been running for a few months now. In fact, she just ran a 5k out to the American West Heritage Center (who is that family on their site?!). It was fun to watch her, and she has said she has been having fun in the morning. She sent me this site which basically tells you how to go from the couch (what a lovely place to be), to running a 5 k in just 9 weeks.
I was unconvinced, but thought I'd give it a go. I downloaded a podcast that tells you when you should be running and walking, I woke up this morning at 6:45, and we headed out.
And it was cake.
I mean, come on. First you walk 5 minutes. Then you run for 60 seconds. I run that long trying to chase down one of my kids to give him his what have for. Then you walk for 90 seconds, and repeat. You only do this for a total of 20 minutes.
My legs are a bit sore, but you only do this 3 times a week. I actually enjoyed it. I'm going to give it a shot again on Friday, and then try the next week on the schedule.
Who knows, maybe I'll try a 5k before this is all over. But if not...I'm also fine with going back to the couch. The couch is such a nice place to be. You can sit on it. You can sleep on it. You can even eat on it, if nobody is watching.

One of the happiest days of my life was when my knee doctor told me not to jog. Yippee!
Watch out it's addicting! I started running last year, fist in air and spitting the entire time, but I signed up for a 5K. This year I am training for a 1/2 marathon.
Have you been biking much?
I have been biking, quite a bit. I was hoping all that exercise would transfer to running, but boy am I sore today. We'll see how it turns out.
This I've gotta see!! Suzanne, you rock! How about the USU Homecoming 5K? (Do they still do that?) I'd love to meet both of you there to run, laugh, and maybe spit if needs be. That podcast thing takes all the work out of starting to run. I say skip the first week's walk 5 min run 1 min. If you've been biking, you're just switching muscle groups, but your heart should be fine. Unless, of course, you suffer from wimpitis. :) P.S. That suggested stretching stuff after you run does really help with the stiffness.
That would be awesome to run it together. I'll have to check to see if they still do that 5 k run.
Yeah, I found I wasn't too winded after the first day's run, but boy I sure used some different muscles. I can barely walk today. It will be quite humorous to see me try to run tomorrow, I'm sure.
Why do all marathon runners always look like they are in a state of torture? And that is what it looks like to me, self inflicted torture. It would be torture for me anyway, my knees gave out on running or jogging many years ago. A good brisk walk will do me just fine.
I've been running here and there for the last few years, but am just now gearing up for a 5K--I'm looking at one in Wellsville, which reminds me I ought to look harder since it's a few weeks away. Once I find my rhythm I really enjoy a good run. Now bikes, they're scary.
Hey Mar! Great job getting out there and running! It DOES feel great doesn't it? :-) Someday Tom and I will have to go on a doubledate with you and Sue running a 5K (and then eating at Costa Vida or Firehouse).
